Vintage 1961 Gladen Aerocar, the flying automobile, plastic toy Airplane Car. Outstanding and rare, Taylor Aerocar scale model toy produced by Gladen Enterprises, Inc. of Bay City Michigan in 1961. Rare 1st State of 3 versions. With original Box. This example is in very good condition. The only defect I could find was a missing pin on one of the wing flaps. The tail section and wings are removable and can be positioned in the towing configuration. From the rear tow point of the car to the front of the grille is nearly 6 inches. In the towing configuration, the total length is nearly 13.5 inches. The Box is very good with all flaps intact with a small tear on one inner flap. Still Has Vandervoort's ( A long Defunct sporting goods store in) East Lansing (Michigan) located at Corner of Grand River and M.A.C. Price tag for $1.98. This is a remarkable and accurate model of the Taylor Aerocar and Gladen Enterprises was the only manufacturer ever authorized to replicate this as a toy. Item will come with copies of pictures, Kit instuctions, Advertising material related to Aerocar. Most of the following info was gleaned or copied from the internet: The production of the real Aerocar never got off the ground, causing the distribution of these model toy items to dealers to stop. Very few ever made it to a dealer. Gladen, however, finished the initial production of the model and placed them in different boxes. Marketing was done to toy stores and model builders. The initial Toy design was the red and yellow - in the box shown above. The second model was green and yellow and was in a similar box with Bob Cumming's picture on it. The third was red and yellow, but the box was a different size and contained a kit of all of the components in cellophane bags for model builders. Molt Taylor invented the Aerocar with the first flight taking place in 1949. During the 1950s the design was improved as Taylor worked to get the Aerocar into production. Whether in the air or being driven along the local streets the Aerocar was frequently seen in Longview Washington. In 1961 actor Bob Cummings used an Aerocar in the opening sequence of his television program, "The Bob Cummings Show" and millions of Americans were introduced to the Aerocar. Carl Gladen, a Michigan toy manufacturer secured the rights to make plastic models of the Aerocar and began producing them in 1961. SA 5232 081019.
