The village of Misterbianco is located on on the slopes of Mount Etna surrounded by fertile lands and the Amenano river. The name of the town refers to the Dominicans Monasterium Album, meaning White Monastery, where the monks used to wear a white habit. It was completely destroyed by the 1669 eruption, but later in the mid-fifties Misterbianco became a big agricultural centre close to Catania, the main city of the province, and in the sixties it began to develop new economic activities connected to the construction industry. The most important cultural attractions of the village are the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, built in the 16th century, has three naves enriched by lots of sacred objects and wonderful works of art dating back to the sixteenth century made by the sculptor Antonello Gagini; the Church of San Nicola, built after 1669 eruption, includes some stunning works of art dating back to the mid-seventeenth century such as the painting depicting St. Peter and two other saints, San Lorenzo and San Placido, the marble altar and its decorations; the Roman Spa displays the ruins of a Roman aqueduct built between the 2nd and 8th century BC. This archeological sight is located in the old town centre near Piazza della Resistenza.
