Rare CAST IRON face mechanical bank in the shape of Administration Building at the 1893 Columbian Exposition World's Fair. Bank opens at front to accept coin which when pushed back into face, part of the coin holder flips downward and allows the coin to drop into the internals of the bank. This mechanism works perfectly as described. Front cast iron plate reads at top "'THE HUB' CHICAGO." and below that " 1492 / 1892." Along the bottom of the face it reads "ADMINISTRATION BLDG COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION." On back side of this plate it reads "COLUMBIAN MAGIC SAVINGS BANK." The trap lock is missing. Bank is 5 inches in height by 5-1/4 inches in width by 1-5/8 inches in thickness. MFG By Magic Introduction Company 1892. Note; I have been told the back on these banks is usually black. This is silver. As I am not an expert you will have to decide for yourself. Bank stands up nicely at a slight back angle for display. A great item for a still or mechanical bank collection. Obviously also collectible for those interested in the 1893 Columbian Exposition World's Fair. Finally, as an advertising item for The Hub it is a piece of Chicago history. Bank is listed in 14 year old reference book at $500. See the listing in Moore, Andy & Susan: The Penny Bank Book: Collecting Still Banks , Revised Edition, 1997, Page 112, Illustration 1066. This was the world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Henry C. Lytton and Sons Company, popularly known as "The Hub," was one of the Chicago's premier clothing stores during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The main store was originally located on the northwest corner of State and Jackson Streets in Chicago's Loop. In 1912, the store moved into the newly built Lytton Building at 235-243 South State Street. Though specializing in men's clothing, The Hub also had retail sales departments devoted to women's clothing, children's wear, shoes, and other accessories. BH 5213 081019
