Scarce ROCHE CAST IRON “TIME SAFE” BANK. Roche Novelty Company in Newark, New Jersey Circa late 1890’s. Embossed on Back “E.M. Roche Novelty Co. Newark, N.J.” and the 1896 patent date. The bank is shaped like a double-door safe with a raised panel containing a clock face. The top edge of the panel has an eagle with spread wings and the center portion of the panel has lettering that reads “TIME SAFE – WHAT TIME DOES IT OPEN”. For this particular bank, a switch on the reverse side can be moved when the hour hand is on the 10 and the minute hand is on the 12. This allows the bar that holds the right door in place to be removed. The bank stands about 7 1/8″ tall and measures approximately 3.75″ wide and 3 1/4 deep (counting knobs on doors). It is pictured on page 104 in Moore’s. Overall Condition of this collectible Time Safe bank is Very Good except for the removeable door and pin. There is a (not uncommon) horizontal crack at the center of the right door That has been braze repaired. The Tip Of the Pin also shows repair. This has caused discoloration of the door and pin and loss of plating. The door seems structurally sound. The original nickel plating also has some pitting overall. The surface has some very light rust in places but generally nice patina. The bank does work and opens at the 10:00 time. Overall, this antique cast iron bank looks great and displays well. It would make a fine addition to any collection. This bank is rated as “scarce” in Moore’s and is seldom offered for sale at any time and is very collectable even in its repaired state.
